A big part of landing a job nowadays comes down to what you bring to the table. What specific skills and experiences do you have under your belt that would benefit the employer? These are seen as in-demand skills and they can help you to figure out what sort of higher education to pursue, as well as whether an internship or volunteer work would be beneficial.

While the business world is vast and employers are unique in various ways, some common business skills are considered to be in high demand at the moment. Here are the most common skills that have been revealed as desirable or even expected by employers.

Creativity Is Seen in a Very Positive Light by Employers

Here’s a skill you may not expect to see on the list, but the fact is that it has been an in-demand skill for years now. Employers appreciate staff who show creativity and this can help you to land a job, keep your job and even work your way up the career ladder. This is a universal in-demand skill, meaning it doesn’t matter what industry you are going into; creativity is valued.

So, what happens if you’re not exactly the creative type? Can you learn to be creative or at least become more creative than you already are? Despite what some may think, creativity is something you can learn. This is the perfect time to focus on increasing your creativity and prepping for your ideal job. One of the best tips when trying to be more creative is to tap into those gut feelings you have and ask yourself how they can be applied to a particular project or task.

Embrace and Have a Solid Understanding of Digital Technology

It’s no secret that we live in a highly digital world right now and it touches just about every industry out there. For that reason, a large majority of employers are looking for candidates who aren’t just familiar with modern technology but have a deep understanding of it so it can be used effectively in their job.

This is exactly why courses such as the MSc Management in a Digital Economy through Aston University are so popular. Those with dreams of finding a job that is middle or upper management need a firm understanding of how digital tech affects such things as management, sales, inventory, production, marketing AI, automation and workforces that can be spread out across multiple locations and even countries.

Being prepared for what digital technology involves right now as well as the modern promises that it offers is a huge selling point when you’re working on your CV.

Be Ready to Adapt in the Moment

The workplace isn’t usually a stagnant environment; things change. It can be a change in policy, techniques, processes, staff, customers, products, production and so forth. As an employee, it’s your job to adapt to the moment and be flexible. Those who can’t change with the times and keep up with the current needs will fall behind and end up being less valuable in the eyes of an employer. If you’re the type that finds change difficult, it’s time to get comfortable with it and embrace it as a positive.

The Ability to Collaborate and Work as a Team

Putting the focus on your talents and skills is warranted, but what about your ability to work with others? In the majority of workspaces, you will be working with other staff, which means you need to be able to collaborate and work as a team. You need to feel comfortable adding to the team and also being supportive of other people’s ideas.

Being a team player also means you are thinking of the whole picture, not just what you want and what makes you happy. Working with others to achieve a task, a milestone or goal will ensure that the company is productive and efficient – something that every boss looks for.

Leadership Skills Will Take You Far

If you have any dreams of being in a management position, you’re going to need to display leadership skills. This proves to an employer that you are up to the task and can direct and lead a team to success. To be an effective leader, you’re going to need to have confidence in yourself and what you bring to the job. Again, this can be a skill you start working on well before you start your job hunt.

The Ability to Multi-Task Makes You an Attractive Candidate

Where it used to be that people were often hired for one task only, today’s employees are expected to be more versatile and able to work under pressure while multi-tasking. And it’s much deeper than just being able to do multiple tasks at once; it needs to be done in a timely, effective and organised manner without getting flustered. It’s not a skill that everyone excels at, which is why it’s so in-demand.

You Can Add Communication Skills to the List

If you’re keeping track and writing each of these in-demand skills down, then you can also add communication skills to the list. The ability to communicate includes speaking, listening and writing skills and is something that should be added to your CV.

For a business to be productive and efficient, there needs to be open communication at all times, in particular between departments. You will need to play a role in this process so employers can see you’re up to the task. In job interviews, candidates are often asked about their communication skills and asked to give examples of good and bad experiences they have been part of.

Being aware of the most in-demand and marketable skills means you’ll have what employers are looking for when it comes to the job hunt. This also means you’re more likely to land your dream job faster.
